There’s a new number 1 in the A-Level league tables, and it is not an expensive private school or a grammar school. It is the King’s College Maths School in Lambeth, London. A highly selective Sixth Form college founded by Highgate School’s former Head of Maths Dan Abramson, it was set up to emulate specialist Maths schools in Russia, more specifically the Kolmogorov Physics and Mathematics School in Moscow, established in 1965 by Andrey Kolmogorov, one of the leading Mathematicians of the 20th Century.
The school’s curriculum combines mathematics with physics and computing to give students the key understanding and skills they will need to go on to study mathematical courses at universities.
Students are selected for their mathematical ability, problem-solving skills and passion for Maths and Sciences. Be aware that the school offers a limited choice of A-Level subjects only:
- Maths
- Further Maths
- Physics
- Computer Science (AS Level)
- Economics (AS-Level)
As a result, all leavers move on to study STEM subjects at university. Results so far have been outstanding:
| A* | A*/A | A*/A/B | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maths | 92% | 98% | 100% |
| Further Maths | 58% | 88% | 100% |
| Physics | 25% | 75% | 96% |
| Econo mics |
33% | 100% | 100% |
The AS results are just as fantastic, with 93% of all grades at A/B, and an incredible 80% of the year group gaining at least three A grades.
Progression to university is exceptional:
- 23% of leavers have confirmed Oxbridge places
- 100% of university applicants have secured places at Russell Group or Sutton Trust 30 universities
- Over half those applicants are going on to study mathematics, with everyone else studying physics, engineering, computer science or economics.
Applications for Sep 2018 entry closed on 1 December 2018. The deadline for Sep 2019 applications will be 1 December 2018.
